In the ethereal expanse of Tibetan spiritual literature, "The Flight of the Garuda" by Keith Dowman stands as a transcendent beacon, guiding the soul through the sublime terrains of Dzogchen teachings. This masterful translation not only breathes life into the poetic songs of Shabkar, the revered itinerant yogi, but also weaves together a tapestry of ancient wisdom that resonates with the very core of our being. Shabkar's songs, rich in metaphor and emotion, serve as a melodious vehicle delivering the essence of Dzogchen practice—ushering us into a direct encounter with the unity of samsara and nirvana within the landscape of our own consciousness. Dowman's work is a rare gem that eloquently presents the quintessential heart advice from one of Tibet's most cherished masters, complemented by four other seminal Dzogchen texts, including a fresh translation from Patrul Rinpoche. This edition not only captures the profound depth of the original teachings but also offers a luminous path for practitioners seeking to delve into the heart of Buddhist philosophy. Whether one is rooted in the traditions of Zen, Vipassana, or any other branch of Buddhism, "The Flight of the Garuda" provides nourishing insights that echo the timeless quest for enlightenment, inviting readers to soar beyond the mundane into the realm of ultimate reality.

Especially beautiful and wise. - Sam Harris
In Dzokchen, compassion is much more than the virtue of loving kindness. Nor does the word compassion in the Dzokchen context denote its English etymological meaning, “suffering together” or “empathy,” although both these meanings may be inferred. Essentially, compassion indicates an open and receptive mind responding spontaneously to the exigencies of an ever-changing field of vibration to sustain the optimal awareness that serves self-and-others’ ultimate desire for liberation and well-being. The conventional meaning of compassion denotes the latter, active part of this definition, and, due to the accretions of Christian connotation, response is limited to specifically virtuous activity. “Responsiveness” defines the origin and cause of selfless activity that can encompass all manner of response. On this nondual Dzokchen path virtue is the effect, not the cause; the ultimate compassionate response is whatever action maximizes Knowledge—loving kindness is the automatic function of Awareness.
