In "Has China Won?", Kishore Mahbubani delves into the heart of the most significant global rivalry of our times—the escalating geopolitical tussle between the United States and China. With an expert blend of analysis and access, Mahbubani navigates the complex web of relationships, ambitions, and tensions that define the US-China dynamic. As a seasoned diplomat with unparalleled insights into the halls of power in both Beijing and Washington, he poses a provocative question: is a confrontation between these superpowers inevitable, or can a path of coexistence be found? Through his discerning lens, Mahbubani examines the core values and strategies at play, from America's pursuit of freedom and strategic decisiveness to China's emphasis on stability and patience, setting the stage for a riveting exploration of what lies ahead in global politics. Mahbubani's narrative is as enlightening as it is urgent, offering a clear-eyed appraisal of where each country's strengths and vulnerabilities lie, from the United States' grappling with deep-seated inequality and a retreat from multilateralism to China's rise as a meritocratic power that champions international cooperation. "Has China Won?" is not just an analysis of geopolitical currents; it is a call to understand the profound implications of this rivalry for the global order. Mahbubani challenges the reader to consider the possibility of a world where competition gives way to common ground, arguing for a future where mutual respect and understanding can avert the specter of conflict. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to comprehend the forces shaping our world in the 21st century.

The long two-thousand-year record of Chinese history clearly shows that China is fundamentally unlike America as it is reluctant to use the military option first. It is also fundamentally different from America in another regard. It does not believe that it has a “universal” mission to promote Chinese civilization and encourage everyone else in humanity to emulate it.
